Meta – Colombia communities are getting closer to putting their forests into production

With the registration of the REDD+ project “Bosques de Paz, Sustento de Vida (Forests of Peace, Livelihoods of Life) in the VERRA standard on July 16, we are getting closer to the goal of conserving the forest and generating sustainable development opportunities for nearly 1,000 families, most of them victims of the Colombian armed conflict.

The main objective of the REDD+ Sur del Meta, Bosques de Paz, Sustento de Vida project is the conservation of 40,637 hectares of natural forest in the municipalities of Vista Hermosa, Puerto Rico, Puerto Concordia and Puerto Lleras in the department of Meta, Colombia.

It is estimated that the project will reduce a total of 3,768,645 tons of CO2 over a 30-year crediting period, with an annual average of 121,569 tons of CO2.

The project has a comprehensive approach in which, in addition to conserving biodiversity and reducing deforestation, it seeks to improve the quality of life of local communities through training to improve their agricultural and livestock practices, support to develop sustainable livestock, cocoa, coffee and citrus farming projects, and strengthening their organizations in forest conservation techniques and governance of their territories.

This project will generate credits between 2020 and 2050. The project is currently in the verification process for the first three years and once this stage is completed, the carbon credits will begin to be sold in the market.

With projects like this one, ALLCOT demonstrates once again that it is possible to reshape our world through comprehensive emission reduction projects that, in addition to economic benefits, generate equity and sustainable development in the most vulnerable communities on the planet.
